  • You can sponsor:

    • Your spouse (legally married), common-law, or conjugal partner

    • Dependent children (under 22 years old and unmarried)

    • Parents and grandparents
In some cases, you may also sponsor orphaned siblings, nieces, nephews, or grandchildren.

  • Processing times vary based on the family member being sponsored, where they’re applying from, and the volume of applications.

    On average:

    • Spousal or partner sponsorship: 12 months

    • Parents and grandparents: 20-24 months or more
However, timelines can change, so it’s important to plan ahead and track updates.

  • Yes! If your spouse or partner is already in Canada, you can apply for inland sponsorship. This also allows them to apply for an open work permit while the sponsorship is being processed.

  • If your application is refused, it’s essential to understand why. You can request GCMS Notes for a detailed explanation of the officer's decision. Depending on the refusal reason, you may have options to reapply, appeal, or explore other immigration pathways.

  • Yes, but this is a two-step process:

    1. You must submit an Interest to Sponsor form during the annual intake period.

    2. If invited, you can submit a full sponsorship application.

If you’re not selected, your parents or grandparents may still be eligible for a Super Visa, allowing extended visits to Canada for up to 5 years at a time.

  • As a sponsor, you commit to an undertaking, which means you agree to provide financial support for a set period:

    • Spouses or partners: 3 years

    • Dependent children: 10 years or until they turn 25 (whichever comes first)

    • Parents or grandparents: 20 years

This includes basic needs like food, housing, and healthcare not covered by public services.

  • Once approved and landed in Canada, your family member becomes a permanent resident. This gives them access to work, study, healthcare, and other benefits.
